Introducing CrinEar.

Over the past decade, Crinacle has become one of the most recognisable names in the audio community. Beginning as a reviewer and measurement database curator, his work has undoubtedly played a significant role in bringing objective measurements into mainstream discussion among IEM and headphone enthusiasts. Like any reviewer with strong opinions, he has both supporters and critics, but regardless of where one stands, his influence has gradually expanded beyond reviewing into tuning collaborations and, more recently, his own brand.

The latest product to carry the CrinEar name is simply called Reference. That’s a very bold name, not because it sounds prestigious, but because it immediately sets an expectation. A very high one, at least for me personally.

Calling an IEM Flagship, Signature or Pro is easy. Those words have largely become marketing terminology. Reference, on the other hand, carries genuine technical weight. It implies that the product isn’t merely designed to sound enjoyable, but truthful enough that listeners can rely on it as a benchmark for evaluating recordings. That’s a very different claim. Naturally, it also raises a far more interesting question – What Exactly is “Reference”?

What Exactly is “Reference”?

Over the past few years, we’ve seen a fundamental shift in how headphone tuning is discussed. Objective measurements have become significantly more accessible, the Brüel & Kjær 5128 measurement system has reshaped our understanding of in-ear acoustics, and target curves such as JM-1 have reignited the debate over what headphone neutrality should actually look like. Rather than following another Harman-inspired tuning or current market trends, the CrinEar Reference has been built around that philosophy. That alone makes it one of the more interesting IEMs I’ve reviewed recently – not simply because of how it sounds, but because of what it’s trying to achieve.

As a musician and educated audio engineer who’s spent over two decades performing, recording and producing music, products like this immediately capture my attention. Not because they’re marketed as reference, but because they make an objective claim. Anyone can describe an IEM as musical, engaging or fun because those qualities are inherently subjective. Reference is different. It’s a claim that invites scrutiny. If you’re going to call something a reference monitor, you’re also inviting comparisons with the tools professionals rely on every day to create the music we listen to.

One thing I’ve learnt after years spent working in studios is that the professional audio world doesn’t define reference quite the same way the audiophile community often does. Among enthusiasts, the term is frequently associated with lean bass, elevated upper-midrange or an analytical presentation. In reality, reference has never been defined by a particular tonal balance.

Walk into ten professional studios and you’ll probably find ten different monitoring systems. Genelec, Neumann, ATC, PMC, JBL, Barefoot and Bowers & Wilkins all have devoted followings, yet none of them measure or sound identically. What they share isn’t a frequency response – it’s trust. Each system is carefully positioned, used in an acoustically treated room and, increasingly, calibrated with software such as Genelec GLM, Neumann MA 1, Sonarworks SoundID Reference, Dirac Live, etc. The goal isn’t mathematical perfection, but a monitoring environment whose decisions consistently translate outside the studio.

That concept becomes even more complicated with IEMs. Unlike loudspeakers, they remove the room from the equation almost entirely. While this creates a far more consistent listening environment between users, it also eliminates the acoustic cues that contribute to how we perceive loudspeakers in a room. The challenge therefore isn’t simply matching a target curve, but recreating that listening experience inside an ear canal only millimetres from the eardrum.

To me, reference has always been about translation. It’s the confidence that when you balance a vocal, adjust the kick drum or tame a harsh cymbal, those decisions will continue to hold up everywhere else. The equipment disappears, leaving only the recording itself.

Ironically, some of the finest reference monitors I’ve ever worked on have also been among the most enjoyable loudspeakers I’ve ever heard. Not because they exaggerated bass or manufactured detail, but because they simply got out of the way. Good recordings sounded spectacular. Poor recordings sounded exactly as poor as they deserved to. The monitoring system wasn’t trying to flatter anything. It was simply being honest. That’s the standard I hold any product carrying the word Reference to. Whether the CrinEar Reference actually earns that title is something we’ll discover over the course of this review. Before we get there, however, I think it’s only fair that I first establish my own frame of reference.

My Reference Framework.

Before I can fairly evaluate the CrinEar Reference, I think it’s only right that I first establish my own frame of reference. Every reviewer has one, whether consciously acknowledged or not. Some gravitate towards warmer tunings, others prefer brighter presentations or more bass. None of those perspectives are inherently wrong, but they inevitably influence how we evaluate what we hear. I’d rather be transparent about mine before evaluating somebody else’s.

Over the years, I’ve developed two frequency-response frameworks that I regularly use when evaluating IEMs and headphones. They aren’t intended as industry standards, nor do I claim they’re objectively superior to every other target. They’re simply the result of my experience as a musician, producer, recording engineer and reviewer, and provide the context for the rest of this review.

Animagus Neutral Target.

Note – This is for IEC711 rig measurements. 

My Neutral Target answers a relatively simple question: “If an IEM were trying to reproduce the tonal balance of neutral studio monitors, what should it measure like?”

I started with the Harman In-Room Target, rather than the Harman In-Ear 2019 preference target, because I wanted a reference based on how acoustically flat loudspeakers measure in a well-designed room rather than on listener preference. Through repeated listening and refinement, I found that a smooth -1 dB/octave downward tilt produced a closer perceptual match to the monitoring systems I know and trust than the published Harman In-Room response itself.

That experience spans professionally calibrated systems from a wide range of manufacturers, including Genelec, ATC, Neumann, Barefoot, ADAM Audio and others, across facilities including Capitol Studios, Sunset Sound, EastWest and The Village, along with Studios A and B at my alma mater, Musicians Institute. Naturally, none of these systems or rooms sound identical, but there was enough consistency in their tonal balance to inform my own interpretation of neutrality. The result is my Animagus Neutral Target – the tonal benchmark I use when evaluating balance, timbre and overall tonal accuracy.

Animagus IEM Preference Target.

My IEM Preference Target answers a different question: “What changes are needed for an IEM to recreate the experience of listening to those same kinds of studio monitoring systems, but with the tonal balance I personally hear and prefer?”

That’s an important distinction. My Neutral Target is concerned primarily with tonal accuracy, while my IEM Preference Target attempts to recreate my subjective experience of loudspeaker monitoring.

Even if an IEM matched a studio monitor’s measured response perfectly, it wouldn’t reproduce the complete experience. Loudspeakers interact with the room, provide natural acoustic crossfeed and spatial cues, and—particularly with a properly integrated subwoofer—produce physical low-frequency coupling that an IEM cannot reproduce in the same way. My individual ear anatomy and HRTF also inevitably influence how I perceive that loudspeaker system, particularly through the upper frequencies. Since this target is ultimately based on recreating my own listening experience, that personal component cannot be completely separated from the result.

Starting with my Neutral Target, while also using the Harman IE 2019 Target as a reference point to see what I would personally change, I spent hundreds of hours and more than twenty iterations refining it against professionally calibrated monitoring systems I’ve owned and worked with throughout my career. These have included the Neumann KH120 II, Genelec 8020, 8030C, 8331A and 8341A, Yamaha NS-10M, HS7 and HS8, ADAM A7X, Equator Audio D5, sE Munro Egg and Event Opal, among others. The primary reference for the final iterations, however, was my professionally calibrated Neumann KH120 II system in my own production room. I wasn’t trying to force the response towards anything predetermined. Each refinement came from repeated A/B comparisons, asking a very practical question: does this actually sound like what I’m hearing from my monitors?

The resulting changes primarily compensate for what is lost when moving from loudspeakers to an IEM. The additional sub-bass restores some of the physical weight and low-frequency coupling of a loudspeaker/subwoofer system, while the additional upper-air helps recreate some of the openness and effortless presentation I associate with listening to those monitors in a room.

So, in simple terms, my Neutral Target is my benchmark for tonal accuracy, while my IEM Preference Target attempts to recreate the listening experience of my trusted reference monitoring systems as closely as possible to the way I personally hear them. And that distinction becomes particularly important when evaluating the CrinEar Reference.

What Exactly is JM-1?

Note – This measurement was taken by Crinacle using a B&K Type 5128. My IEC711 coupler measurements are provided further into the review.

The JM-1 target (often referred to as the baseline behind the “New Meta” IEM tuning) was developed through a mathematical combination of ear simulator responses and human acoustic averages.

The Problem: The Brüel & Kjær (B&K) Type 5128 ear simulator’s natural Diffuse Field (DF) response was found to be noticeably brighter in the upper frequencies than what an average human perceives as neutral at the eardrum. Relying solely on the raw B&K 5128 DF HRTF created a baseline that sounded overly bright or sterile to human ears.

The Solution: Acoustic researcher Joel Merrifield (widely known as JM in the audio measurement community) developed the JM-1 baseline to bridge this gap.

The Calculation: Merrifield calculated a weighted average Diffuse Field HRTF. For frequency regions dominated by the outer ear (pinna), he shifted the weight toward the generic human population average DF derived from the ISO 11904-1 standard. For regions where the ear canal contributes most to acoustic gain, he used the specific ear canal transfer characteristics of the B&K 5128.

The Result: The resulting JM-1 curve creates an idealised, anthropomorphically accurate diffuse-field baseline for in-ear monitors. When combined with a gradual downward tilt (typically around -0.8 dB to -1 dB per octave, or ~10 dB total tilt from bass to treble), it models how flat-in-room studio loudspeakers naturally sound when perceived through a human ear canal.

Does That Make JM-1 the New Definition of Neutrality?

Personally, I don’t think the answer is quite that simple. Neutrality is an attempt to reproduce a recording without imposing an obvious tonal character of its own. Reference, on the other hand, is ultimately about trust – having enough confidence in your monitoring system that the decisions you make continue to translate elsewhere. They’re closely related, but they’re not identical. There also isn’t a single universally accepted reference within professional audio. Different engineers work with different monitoring systems, rooms and calibration philosophies, yet all can provide highly reliable references when properly implemented.

That’s important because Reference isn’t a destination. It’s a framework. JM-1 is one such framework, and a very compelling one. What makes the CrinEar Reference particularly interesting is that it isn’t merely inspired by JM-1; it attempts to implement that philosophy as faithfully as possible in an actual IEM. And that’s where measurements become useful. Not because they tell us how an IEM sounds, but because they tell us whether the designers actually achieved what they set out to achieve.

Does the CrinEar Reference Actually Follow JM-1 and succeed?

There’s an important distinction between an IEM that’s merely inspired by a target and one that’s genuinely engineered around it. Looking at the measurements, the CrinEar Reference follows JM-1 remarkably closely. The main departure is a slightly fuller sub-bass shelf, which I think is a sensible choice – it adds a little more foundation without introducing unnecessary warmth or mid-bass bleed. From the lower midrange through the vocal region and lower treble, the execution remains impressively faithful, without resorting to excessive upper-midrange or lower-treble energy to manufacture clarity.

Rather than trying to “improve” JM-1, CrinEar has simply committed to executing it. Judging purely from the measurements, it’s an excellent implementation and one of the cleanest executions of JM-1 I’ve encountered. Of course, measurements tell us whether the target was achieved. They don’t tell us whether that target actually makes for a great IEM. And that’s where things get interesting.

Enough philosophical talk. Now let’s get into CrinEar Reference properly – like our usual reviews – and take it from there.

Tech & Architecture.

The CrinEar Reference uses a 2DD + 3BA configuration, with twin custom 10 mm dynamic drivers arranged in a horizontally opposed configuration for the bass, alongside twin Sonion midrange drivers and a Knowles super-tweeter. The drivers are housed in a 5-axis CNC-machined aluminium shell, with a dedicated crossover network handling the multi-driver integration. CrinEar also uses a modular silver-plated copper cable with interchangeable 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm terminations. On paper, it’s a fairly conventional hybrid concept taken to a more elaborate implementation, with the twin-woofer arrangement specifically intended to improve bass control and linearity.

Build Quality, Fit, Comfort & Isolation.

The CrinEar Reference feels every bit like the serious monitoring tool it is intended to be. The shells are CNC-machined from aluminium and finished extremely well, giving them a reassuringly solid and premium feel without becoming unnecessarily bulky. I particularly like the understated design – there’s very little here that’s trying to look flashy, which suits the whole philosophy of the Reference rather nicely.

Fit is secure and, for my ears, very comfortable. The contoured shell sits naturally inside the ear without requiring particularly deep insertion, while the supplied tips make achieving a consistent seal fairly easy. I was able to wear the Reference for several hours at a time without experiencing the usual pressure or hotspot issues I sometimes encounter with larger universal IEMs. The aluminium construction does make it somewhat heavier than a typical resin-shell IEM, but once seated I rarely noticed the additional weight. The build also inspires considerably more confidence for regular travel and professional use.

Passive noise isolation is equally good, provided you get a proper seal. It isn’t quite at the level of a deeply inserted stage monitor, particularly with low-frequency environmental noise, but it does a very good job of keeping external distractions out. More importantly, the stable seal means the bass response doesn’t constantly change with movement – something that’s particularly important for an IEM intended for critical monitoring.

Overall, the Reference feels built like a very well designed professional and audiophile tool rather than an expensive piece of jewellery, and I think that’s exactly the right approach for this particular IEM.

My Sound Analysis.

Having established that the CrinEar Reference faithfully executes its stated design philosophy, I deliberately stopped looking at graphs for the next several weeks and simply listened. What struck me almost immediately wasn’t spectacular bass, exaggerated detail or an artificially expansive presentation. It was simply how composed everything sounded. The CrinEar Reference never feels like it’s trying to impress you. There’s no bloated bass to create excitement, aggressive upper-midrange to manufacture clarity or overly bright treble to give the illusion of greater resolution. Instead, it presents music with a remarkable sense of tonal balance, allowing the recording – not the tuning – to remain the focus. In many ways, that’s exactly what I expect from something called Reference.

That said, I found the Reference a little conservative for my own interpretation of a reference monitor. Its restrained upper treble gives the presentation a slightly intimate character compared to what I hear from well-calibrated studio monitoring systems. As a result, perceived detail retrieval is good rather than exceptional, and the soundstage remains more focused than expansive. Interestingly, once I overlaid it against my own Neutral and IEM Preference Targets, those impressions made perfect sense – the differences largely correspond to where our two approaches diverge in the upper treble.

Let’s dig in deeper…

Bass – The bass is one of the CrinEar Reference’s strongest qualities. Rather than chasing quantity or exaggerated impact, it prioritises extension, control and linearity. Sub-bass reaches convincingly deep without dominating the presentation, while the mid-bass remains exceptionally disciplined and cleanly integrated into the lower midrange. Kick drums have convincing weight without becoming oversized, bass guitars retain excellent pitch definition and synth bass has the depth and physicality it needs without bleeding into everything above it. I particularly like the continuity between sub-bass, mid-bass and lower mids; there is no obvious point where the bass suddenly feels detached from the rest of the tuning.

From a production perspective, this is bass I find very easy to trust. It’s sufficiently full that music never sounds lean, yet restrained enough that I can judge bass balance and low-frequency masking without constantly second-guessing what the IEM is adding. It doesn’t make the bass the star of the show, it simply lets the recording do that when it wants to.

Midrange – If there’s one area where the CrinEar Reference truly excels, it’s the midrange. Vocals sound wonderfully believable, sitting naturally within the mix without feeling recessed or artificially pushed forward. Male vocals retain convincing body, female vocals remain articulate without becoming shouty, and acoustic instruments consistently display excellent timbral realism. What impresses me most is the lack of editorialising. The Reference doesn’t push vocals closer simply to create clarity, nor does it add warmth to make everything sound richer. A vocal recorded intimately remains intimate; a backing vocal placed further back stays there. Guitars, piano and other instruments retain their natural body without being artificially spotlighted. From a mixing perspective, this is where I found myself trusting the Reference most. It gives me enough information to judge vocal balance, midrange masking and instrumental relationships without constantly wondering whether the IEM itself is imposing a colour on the recording. For me, this is easily the highlight of the entire tuning.

Treble – The treble follows the same philosophy as the rest of the tuning, prioritising long-term listening comfort and tonal naturalness over hyper-analytical detail. Through the lower and mid-treble, roughly 4–8 kHz, it remains exceptionally controlled, avoiding the exaggerated presence peaks and artificial sharpness that can make many modern IEMs sound more detailed than they actually are. Cymbals retain convincing texture, strings sound natural, vocal sibilants remain well controlled and acoustic-guitar attack has enough bite without becoming fatiguing.

Where my own reference framework begins to diverge is higher up. Above roughly 10 kHz, the Reference rolls off more conservatively than I personally prefer. Not because I want a brighter IEM, but because I find a little more upper-air helps recreate the effortless openness I associate with professionally calibrated monitoring systems. That difference is audible. The Reference sounds exceptionally smooth and easy to live with, but it also has a slightly more intimate presentation, with less perceived air, spatial openness and microdetail than my own reference targets. On dense orchestral and acoustic recordings, ambience and high-frequency decay don’t project with quite the same effortless extension I hear from my calibrated monitoring systems, while very fine textures – such as a vocalist’s breath or the trailing decay of a ride cymbal – are somewhat less apparent.

For everyday listening, I think this is a very sensible trade-off. The treble is smooth, natural and remarkably fatigue-free. For critical monitoring, however, I feel the restrained upper treble leaves a little performance on the table. A modest increase in energy above 10 kHz would, in my opinion, give the Reference more air, perceived micro-detail and spatial openness without compromising the excellent tonal balance that makes it such a convincing reference IEM.

Technical Performance

Technically, the CrinEar Reference performs very much in line with its tonal philosophy. For the price, imaging is precise, separation is quite nice and transient response remains clean and controlled. Resolution is respectable, but the restrained upper treble means it doesn’t project the same sense of effortless detail as some of the brighter W-shaped IEMs on the market.

The soundstage follows the same pattern. Rather than sounding expansive or holographic, it presents music with realistic proportions and excellent positional accuracy. Width and depth are convincing, but the overall presentation remains more intimate than spacious.

Personally, I think a modest increase in upper-treble energy would enhance perceived openness, soundstage and detail retrieval without fundamentally altering the excellent tonal balance. Even so, I don’t see this as a flaw so much as a philosophical difference. The CrinEar Reference isn’t trying to maximise perceived technical performance through frequency-response emphasis. It’s trying to remain faithful to JM-1. And in that respect, I think it succeeds remarkably well.

Comparisons

CrinEar Reference vs Daybreak.

The Daybreak is probably the most obvious comparison because both come from the same designer, yet they have noticeably different personalities. The Daybreak is the more relaxed and immediately enjoyable listen, with a little more warmth, bass presence and overall musicality. The Reference feels more disciplined by comparison, with tighter bass, a cleaner midrange and a more restrained upper register. Vocals on the Reference also feel a little more precisely positioned, whereas the Daybreak gives the presentation a touch more body and openness. For casual listening, I actually find the Daybreak easier to sink into, but when I’m critically listening or evaluating a recording, I much prefer the Reference’s more controlled and consistent presentation.

CrinEar Reference vs HiSenior Audio Mega7.

The HiSenior Audio Mega7 is one of the more interesting alternatives to the CrinEar Reference because both are fundamentally natural and well-balanced—with the Mega7 being broadly tuned towards JM-1 as well, based on my conversations with Gareth, HiSenior’s founder. It’s the CrinEar Reference, however, that follows it remarkably closely—almost eerily so. The Mega7 is fuller, more open and more physically engaging. Its greater bass presence, larger sense of space and stronger perceived detail make it the more immediately exciting listen, while the Reference feels leaner, more intimate and deliberately restrained. Personally, I gravitate towards the Mega7 for general listening, but the Reference for critical tonal evaluation. The Mega7 gives me more scale and atmosphere; the Reference keeps me more focused on the tonal relationships within the recording. In short, the Mega7 feels like the more complete listening experience, while the Reference feels like the more disciplined monitor.

CrinEar Reference vs Yu9 Audio QUE.

The Yu9 Audio QUE takes a more expressive approach to neutrality. It sounds more open and spacious, with greater perceived detail and a livelier overall presentation, while the CrinEar Reference is more understated and deliberately neutral. The QUE makes recordings feel larger and more immediate, whereas the Reference tends to disappear into the recording itself. I personally find the QUE more exciting to listen to, particularly with complex instrumental arrangements, but the Reference is easier for me to trust when I’m judging tonal relationships rather than simply enjoying the presentation. The QUE draws me into the performance; the Reference gets out of the way and lets the performance speak for itself.

CrinEar Reference vs Softears Volume S.

The Softears Volume S is one of the more interesting alternatives because it manages to combine a very natural tonal foundation with considerably more warmth and musicality. Compared with the CrinEar Reference, the Volume S has greater bass weight, a richer lower midrange and a slightly more relaxed overall presentation. Vocals have a touch more body and acoustic instruments can sound wonderfully organic, while the Reference keeps everything a little cleaner, more tightly controlled and more tonally accurate. I suspect the Volume S will be the more immediately appealing listen especially for people who prefer more bass but the Reference gives me greater confidence tonally – be it me trying to evaluate a recording or simply enjoy it.

CrinEar Reference vs Softears RSV (Mk1 & Mk2).

The original Softears RSV remains one of the IEMs I associate most strongly with natural vocal reproduction. Its midrange has an organic quality that makes vocals and acoustic instruments exceptionally convincing, and the CrinEar Reference shares much of that same instinct for believable timbre. The Reference, however, feels slightly cleaner and more disciplined overall, particularly through the bass and upper-frequency balance. The RSV Mk2 takes the original concept further with improved technical refinement, making it a more formidable competitor from a resolution and presentation standpoint. Even so, the Reference remains the more explicitly reference-oriented of the group. The RSV sounds like a beautifully voiced monitor designed to make music sound right; the Reference feels like someone has taken that same goal and applied a stricter calibration philosophy to it.

CrinEar Reference vs Moondrop S8.

The Moondrop S8 remains one of the more analytical neutral IEMs I’ve heard, and switching between it and the CrinEar Reference immediately highlights how differently two “reference” tunings can approach detail. The S8 has a stronger sense of clarity and immediacy through the upper midrange and lower treble, making leading edges and small details more obvious. The Reference sounds smoother, fuller and considerably more relaxed by comparison, with a more natural presentation over longer listening sessions. The S8 can impress very quickly because of that added immediacy, but the Reference grows on me the longer I listen. For dissecting a recording, I’d still appreciate the S8’s incisiveness; for judging the overall tonal balance and living with the music for hours, I’d take the Reference.

CrinEar Reference vs BGVP DMA.

The BGVP DMA takes a much more energetic approach. It sounds bigger, more physical and more immediately impressive, with greater emphasis on bass impact, transient attack and the sensation of technical detail. The CrinEar Reference is considerably calmer by comparison, with a more restrained bass response, smoother midrange integration and less insistence on making every detail announce itself. The DMA can be spectacular with electronic music, cinematic material and tracks where scale and impact are important, but that excitement also gives it a more coloured tonal character. The Reference feels less dramatic at first, but the longer I listen, the more convincing its consistency becomes. For pure enjoyment, the DMA can be more fun; as a reference-oriented listen, I find myself trusting the CrinEar Reference more.

Did It Change My Mind?

Before spending several weeks with the CrinEar Reference, JM-1 was, to me, an interesting piece of acoustic research. Like any target curve, however, it remained largely theoretical until I could hear a thoughtful implementation in practice.

That changed here. The CrinEar Reference demonstrated that JM-1 can translate into a remarkably coherent and believable real-world IEM tuning. More interestingly, when I finally overlaid it against my own targets, I discovered that my Neutral Target arrives at remarkably similar decisions through much of the spectrum, despite being developed through a different methodology and independent set of reference points. That gave me considerably more confidence that some of the fundamental principles behind JM-1 make sense perceptually, rather than simply looking convincing mathematically and on a graph.

What it didn’t change was my own interpretation of where the final objective should be. My Neutral Target and the CrinEar Reference are already remarkably close through much of the frequency range, but my IEM Preference Target deliberately takes things further at both ends – adding a little more sub-bass for the physicality lost through IEMs and more upper-air to recreate the openness of my trusted monitoring systems as I personally hear and prefer them.

So I wouldn’t say the CrinEar Reference changed my definition. It gave me more confidence in it.

Who Is This For?

The CrinEar Reference isn’t an IEM designed to impress during a quick audition. If your priorities are visceral bass, exaggerated detail or an expansive, cinematic presentation, there are plenty of alternatives that will sound more immediately exciting. That’s simply not what this IEM is trying to achieve.

Instead, it’s aimed squarely at listeners who value tonal honesty above spectacle. Recording engineers, musicians, producers, content creators and enthusiasts looking for a reliable reference will appreciate its disciplined approach. It’s equally compelling for anyone who’s grown tired of increasingly aggressive “detail-first” tunings and simply wants an IEM that allows the recording to speak for itself.

That restraint, however, may also be its biggest hurdle. Listeners accustomed to brighter or more analytical presentations may initially perceive the Reference as less detailed or spacious than they’re used to. In reality, it is simply making a different trade-off, prioritising tonal consistency and naturalness over maximum perceived clarity and air.

Final Verdict.

As an IEM – Stepping away from graphs and target curves, the CrinEar Reference is simply an excellent IEM. Its greatest strength is the maturity of its tuning. The bass is disciplined without sounding anaemic, the midrange is exceptionally natural, and the overall presentation remains remarkably cohesive and fatigue-free.

Its biggest compromise is also a consequence of that restraint. I would’ve preferred a little more energy through the 4–20 kHz region, particularly above 10 kHz, to bring the presentation closer to the openness I hear from my trusted, professionally calibrated monitoring systems. A little more energy through the 10–20 kHz region would have given it more air, perceived detail and soundstage without compromising its excellent tonal balance.

Even so, these are refinements rather than fundamental flaws. The CrinEar Reference remains one of the most coherent and thoughtfully tuned IEMs I’ve heard in its class, and one I’d happily recommend to anyone looking for an honest and natural presentation.

Would I trust the CrinEar Reference as a reference monitor? Yes! After several weeks of listening to familiar recordings, revisiting my own productions and comparing it against my calibrated monitoring systems, I found very little that consistently misled me. Tonal balance is excellent, vocal timbre is highly convincing and bass integration is exemplary.

More importantly, the measurements support what I hear. The CrinEar Reference follows my Animagus Neutral Target remarkably closely through much of the spectrum, particularly the midrange. The main differences appear towards the extremes, where my Neutral Target carries slightly less low-end weight and slightly more treble energy.

Where I diverge is with my IEM Preference Target, which asks a different question: how can an IEM recreate not just the tonal balance, but my subjective experience of sitting in front of my calibrated monitoring systems? That’s where the Reference stops just short. My additional sub-bass compensates for the physicality lost from loudspeaker reproduction, while the additional upper-air attempts to recreate some of the openness and effortless presentation of listening to monitors in a room as I personally hear and prefer them.

So while the CrinEar Reference doesn’t represent my complete interpretation of reference monitoring, as a tonal reference, I have very little hesitation trusting it. In fact, after deliberately setting aside my personal obsessiveness and continuing to use it for a couple of hours as a reference, I found myself feeling remarkably at home with it for roughly 90% of what I was evaluating. For an IEM at this price, especially considering that I’m fortunate enough to have some of the best IEMs from most major brands in my reference collection, I think that says quite a lot.

Conclusion.

When I started this review, I expected to evaluate another well-tuned IEM. Instead, the CrinEar Reference made me think – and write a very long article – about what Reference actually means to me.

JM-1 demonstrated that a modern, research-derived target can translate into an exceptionally coherent and believable IEM. What impressed me even more was how closely the CrinEar Reference aligns with my own Animagus Neutral Target through much of the spectrum, despite arriving there through a different methodology. My IEM Preference Target asks a different question. It takes that tonal foundation and attempts to recreate the subjective experience of my trusted monitoring systems as closely as possible to the way I personally hear and prefer them. That’s a different objective, not a disagreement with JM-1.

And that’s ultimately what I took away from this review. The CrinEar Reference didn’t change my definition of Reference. It challenged me to justify it.

As an IEM, it’s natural, coherent and exceptionally easy to live with. As a tonal reference, it’s one of the most convincing implementations I’ve encountered, particularly of the JM-1 philosophy. It may not completely recreate the experience of sitting in front of my studio monitors for me personally, but as an IEM designed to be a Reference, CrinEar has made a very convincing case.
