Introduction.

Every now and then, an IEM comes along with an idea behind it that goes a little beyond simply throwing a bunch of drivers into a shell and giving it a fancy name. The Binary Acoustics 1900 is one of those. Supposedly the name comes from The Legend of 1900, Giuseppe Tornatore’s 1998 film about Danny Boodman T.D. Lemon 1900, the extraordinary pianist who spends his entire life aboard an ocean liner. Binary has carried that theme into the design of the IEM itself, with a beautiful 316L stainless-steel faceplate engraved with musical notes and piano-inspired details. It gives the 1900 a distinctly vintage, almost old-world character, which makes a rather refreshing change from the usual collection of crystals, geometric patterns and science-fiction spacecrafts that seem to have become the default language of modern IEM design.

But the interesting part isn’t just the faceplate. Inside each shell, the 1900 packs a 10mm dynamic driver, a 6mm passive radiator and four balanced-armature drivers, with a three-way crossover handling the whole affair. The passive radiator is particularly interesting because Binary is using it as part of the low-frequency acoustic system rather than simply adding another electrically driven transducer to the specification sheet. It is a concept Binary has explored before, but here it has been combined with a more conventional multi-BA hybrid arrangement.

On paper, then, the 1900 looks rather serious for an IEM costing around $235. But this is also one of the most competitive segments of the market today. There is no shortage of excellent hybrids, tribrids and even remarkably capable single-dynamic-driver IEMs hovering around this price, so driver count alone isn’t going to get anybody very far. What ultimately matters is how well all those ingredients come together. And that is where the 1900 gets interesting. Let’s take a closer look.

Packaging & Accessories.

Binary keeps the presentation sensible rather than trying to turn a $235 IEM into a miniature luxury-watch unboxing. The company has clearly concentrated more of the budget on the 1900 itself rather than filling the box with a mountain of accessories that will spend most of their lives in a drawer. Inside the box you get:

The cable itself is perfectly sensible. It is braided, flexible enough for normal portable use and, importantly, isn’t one of those inexplicably stiff aftermarket-looking cables that seems designed primarily for product photography. Binary offers the 1900 with either a 3.5mm or 4.4mm termination rather than a modular plug system, which is a small omission at this price when modular cables have become increasingly common in this segment. Thankfully, the IEM side uses the standard 0.78mm 2-pin connection, so replacing the cable later is about as painless as it gets.

The supplied eartips are something that come with quite a few IEMs in this price range. I like them as they’re quite versatile to get most ears properly sealed without immediately sending you off on an aftermarket-tip shopping expedition. That seal is particularly important here because, as with any dynamic-driver design, the low-frequency balance can change substantially with insertion and fit. The carrying case is similarly practical rather than decorative. It isn’t trying to be a luxury accessory that deserves its own place on the mantelpiece; it simply gives you a sensible way of protecting the IEM when it isn’t in your ears.

At this price, I wouldn’t call the accessory package extravagant, but it is complete and sensibly put together. The two things I would have liked to see are a wider variety of eartips and, especially, a modular termination system for those of us regularly switching between DAPs, dongles and desktop sources. Beyond that, there isn’t much to complain about. The supplied cable is perfectly usable, the case is practical, and everything you need to get started is there. More importantly, Binary has clearly prioritised the IEM itself rather than padding out the box with accessories that look impressive on paper but ultimately add little to the experience. And honestly, at this price, that’s where I’d rather the money went. The star of the package is very clearly sitting in the middle of the box, and thankfully, Binary hasn’t needed to distract you with the rest of it.

Design & Build Quality.

The 1900 is one of those IEMs that photographs nicely but looks considerably better in person. The faceplates are CNC-finished 316L stainless steel with an intricate vintage engraving that incorporates flowing musical notation and piano-inspired elements. It is a design that could very easily have gone horribly wrong. There is a fine line between “musical instrument inspired” and “concert hall souvenir shop”, and Binary manages to stay on the right side of it. The combination of the engraved metal and dark translucent resin gives the 1900 a mature, almost boutique appearance rather than the increasingly familiar science-fiction aesthetic of many modern hybrids.

The dark resin shells themselves are relatively understated, allowing the faceplates to remain the visual focus. Depending on the lighting, you can see some of the internal structure through the translucent material, which adds a nice sense of depth without turning the shells into completely transparent demo units. Construction quality is excellent. The stainless-steel faceplates provide a reassuring sense of solidity while the resin body keeps the overall package from becoming unnecessarily heavy. Independent impressions have consistently noted that the 1900 has more physical heft than the typical lightweight resin IEM, but without becoming cumbersome during use. There is an interesting contrast here between the visual character and the engineering philosophy. The outside is deliberately nostalgic, almost romantic. Inside, it is a modern hybrid architecture with a three-way crossover, carefully divided driver duties and an unusual passive low-frequency element.

Fit & Comfort.

The shell is on the medium-to-large side, although its contours are very ergonomic that the size will most not be an issue for most average ears. The shape provides a fairly secure insertion and the nozzle geometry allows the earhooks to sit naturally without requiring excessive cable manipulation. This is not one of those IEMs where you spend the first five minutes wondering whether your ear anatomy has personally offended the designer. The semi-custom contours are smooth, there are no obvious sharp edges or awkward protrusions, and the weight is distributed reasonably well.

Isolation is also good for a vented dynamic-driver design. Because the 1900 uses a passive-radiator system rather than behaving like a completely sealed multi-BA monitor, it isn’t going to provide the same level of environmental isolation as a fully sealed all-BA design, but it should be more than adequate for ordinary commuting, office use and casual portable listening.  As always, tip selection matters here. The low-frequency tuning relies heavily on getting a proper seal, and the difference between “good bass” and “where did my bass go?” is frequently nothing more complicated than three millimetres of silicone.

Sound Analysis.

The Binary Acoustics 1900 takes a mildly V-shaped approach to the Harman In-Ear 2019 target, with a healthy bass elevation, a relatively restrained upper-midrange and a more energetic upper treble. It is clearly coloured rather than reference-oriented, but the overall response remains fairly well balanced. The bass provides the warmth and weight, the mids retain enough presence for vocals and instruments to remain properly anchored, and the treble adds a good deal of sparkle and contrast.

What is interesting is how these deviations translate perceptually. The 1900 doesn’t come across as an overtly V-shaped IEM because the midrange is not excessively recessed. Instead, the presentation has a warm foundation with a cleaner, more open character towards the top. There is plenty of energy in the upper registers, although the way that energy is distributed becomes increasingly important once you spend more time with it.

There are compromises here, as there should be at this price. The bass prioritises quantity over outright incisiveness, while the treble emphasis gives the 1900 a crisp character without necessarily corresponding to flagship-level resolution. For $235, however, the technical foundation is quite solid, and the more interesting aspect of the 1900 is arguably how it combines that competence with a distinctly musical presentation. It is a tuning with enough colour to have a personality, but enough restraint to remain very versatile. The rest of the story is in how each part of the spectrum contributes to that balance.

Let’s break it down…

Bass – There is a healthy amount of bass here. The 1900 has enough sub-bass and mid-bass presence to give kick drums, bass guitars and electronic low-end plenty of weight, and it is one of the first things you notice when coming from a more neutral IEM. There is a nice warmth underneath the presentation, and music rarely feels starved for low-end energy. The catch is that the bass quality doesn’t quite keep pace with the quantity. To my ears, it has a somewhat rounded and slightly boomy character, and the leading edge of bass notes isn’t particularly sharp. You get the thump, but not always the whack. There is weight behind the notes, but they don’t have the particularly crisp attack or explosive slam that some of the better dynamic-driver designs can produce. This becomes more obvious with faster bass passages, where the 1900 can sound a little softer and less incisive than I’d ideally want. It isn’t slow or muddy to the point of becoming a problem, but there is definitely some extra roundness around the notes.

At the same time, I don’t think that roundedness is entirely a bad thing in the context of the 1900. It contributes to the warmth and slightly romantic quality of the presentation, and the bass has enough body to make vocals, guitars and piano feel more substantial without bulldozing into the lower mids. That’s probably why I find the 1900’s bass more enjoyable in the context of the whole signature than its technical shortcomings might suggest. So, for me, the 1900 gets the amount of bass more right than the quality of it. I’d happily take a little more control and attack, but the quantity and warmth are a big part of what makes the 1900 so easy to listen to.

Midrange – This is probably the most straightforward part of the 1900’s tuning. The 1900 has a fairly natural rise through the 1–3kHz region, which gives vocals good presence and intelligibility, but it doesn’t continue pushing through the upper mids towards the kind of 9–10dB ear gain you get with Harman IE 2019 or tilted Diffuse Field-style tunings. Instead, things are gently reined in beyond that, and that is exactly what will keep the presentation from becoming shouty for those who are sensitive to this region. Vocals sit in a very comfortable position – male voices get some additional warmth and body from the low end without becoming thick, while female vocals remain clear and articulate without having that “hello, I am now three inches from your nose” quality some aggressively tuned IEMs can produce.

The flip side is that I do miss a bit of bite from guitars and other instruments that rely heavily on the upper-midrange for their attack and edge. That dip through the upper mids takes some of the immediacy out of those instruments and can introduce a slight haze around their presence and articulation, particularly when compared with IEMs that follow a more pronounced ear-gain profile. It’s not enough to make the 1900 sound dull, but there is definitely a softer quality to the way upper-midrange information comes through.

And that is really where I think the 1900’s midrange will appeal to a particular kind of listener. If you dislike the more pronounced 9–10dB ear gain that a lot of modern reference-y tunings employ, the 1900’s approach should be right up your alley. It keeps vocals forward enough to remain intelligible without pushing them aggressively into your face, and it takes some of that glare and intensity out of guitars, strings and other upper-midrange-heavy instruments.

I also like the way piano and acoustic instruments are handled. There is enough lower-mid information to retain body, while the upper mids aren’t so elevated that everything starts sounding hard-edged. Timbre isn’t going to make me forget some of the really exceptional IEMs I’ve heard in this area, but the 1900 gets the fundamentals right. And honestly, that’s probably what I appreciate most about the midrange. It doesn’t try too hard. Vocals have presence, instruments retain their body, and nothing is constantly demanding your attention. You give up a little bite and immediacy in the upper mids, but in return you get a smoother, less shout-prone presentation that should work particularly well for listeners who don’t enjoy reference-y or aggressively ear-gained presentations.

Treble – The treble is where the 1900 decides to have a little more fun. There is a relative relaxation around 5–6kHz, followed by a noticeable rise around the resonant 8kHz peak of the coupler and another peak further up around 10–14kHz. The subjective result is a fairly sparkly, energetic top end rather than a broadly bright one, with plenty of sheen around cymbals and upper harmonics. I don’t personally find that higher peak particularly bothersome. I can understand why another listener could be more sensitive to it, because this area is unusually dependent on individual ear anatomy and insertion, but with my ears it contributes more to the 1900’s sparkle than to outright harshness. The more interesting part to me is the balance around the lower treble. The relative dip through 5–6kHz takes a little bite and immediacy away from things like guitars, snares and certain strings, so while the 1900 has plenty of sparkle, it isn’t necessarily the most incisive-sounding IEM through this part of the spectrum.

At the same time, the treble isn’t simply elevated from 5kHz all the way into the top octave. There are dips between those peaks, and the response eventually rolls off up high. So I wouldn’t call the 1900 broadly bright. It is more accurate to describe it as sparkly with specific areas of emphasis, giving it plenty of energy without turning the entire top end into a wall of brightness. There is one caveat. That extra upper-treble energy can make the 1900 sound more detailed than it actually is. You’ll notice cymbal textures, consonants and little leading-edge details readily enough, but the more relaxed 5–6kHz region means some instruments don’t have the same attack and definition underneath that sparkle. In other words, there is plenty of information being brought forward, but not all of it arrives with equal incisiveness.

And I think that’s a pretty good summary of the 1900’s treble. It prioritises sparkle and musical contrast over outright bite and refinement. I like that balance overall because it keeps the warmer bass from making the presentation too laid-back, but it also shows how the 1900 can sound lively and detailed without necessarily sounding exceptionally resolving.

Musicality & Overall Character – And this is where I think the 1900 deserves a little more credit than the technical breakdown above might suggest. If I stop being a reviewer for a moment and simply listen to it as an IEM, the 1900 can be surprisingly addictive. There is something slightly romantic about the way it presents music. The fuller bass gives instruments and vocals some body, the midrange keeps people and instruments sounding present and natural, and that bit of treble sparkle adds just enough sheen to make everything feel alive.

It isn’t the most neutral, most resolving or most technically accomplished presentation I’ve heard in this price range. But musicality isn’t something you can reduce to a checklist of technical achievements. Sometimes an IEM just has a balance that makes you want to keep listening, and I think the 1900 has that quality. Put on a well-recorded vocal track, some jazz, an acoustic recording or simply an album you know extremely well, and the 1900 has a way of making the presentation feel a little richer and more inviting than the raw technical assessment would suggest. That slightly rounded bass, which I criticise from a technical standpoint, also contributes to the warmth and physicality that make the overall presentation so easy to sink into.

This is probably the 1900’s biggest strength in isolation: it is an enjoyable, musical and slightly romantic listen. The technical performance is more than good enough for the price, but the reason I can see myself reaching for it isn’t because I’m trying to extract the last half-percent of resolution from a recording. It’s because it makes putting on an album and simply getting lost in it rather easy. And sometimes, that’s the bit that matters.

Technical Performance.

Soundstage – The 1900 has a reasonably spacious stage with good width and a decent sense of scale for the price. It doesn’t sound cramped, and there is enough room around individual instruments to keep busier recordings from becoming congested. The fuller low end also gives the presentation a slightly more enveloping character, which adds to the sense of scale. It isn’t an exceptionally large or deep stage, though. The image doesn’t extend dramatically beyond the head, and the rear of the stage doesn’t have the same amount of ambient information or dimensionality you get from more accomplished sets. For $235, however, the 1900 does a very good job of giving you a spacious and well-proportioned presentation, without resorting to an obviously artificial sense of width. The limitation is less about outright size and more about how far that stage extends into the depth and ambience of the recording.

Left-to-Right Separation & Imaging – Left-to-right separation is solid, and quite good for the price. Hard-panned guitars, percussion and backing vocals remain easy to follow, while centrally placed vocals stay reasonably stable. Even in dense stereo productions, instruments don’t collapse into a congested left/right blob, which is particularly useful given the 1900’s warmer tonal balance. That said, the relatively relaxed upper-midrange and lower-treble region does have a small knock-on effect here. Instruments that rely heavily on that region for bite and attack, particularly electric guitars, snares and some strings, don’t have quite the same leading-edge definition or immediacy that they would on a more strongly ear-gained tuning. There can be a slight softness or haze around their presence, which in turn takes a little edge off the perceived separation. Imaging itself is quite good, with individual elements occupying reasonably clear positions within the stage. The images aren’t particularly finely etched and the gaps between them aren’t especially pronounced, but the positional information remains stable enough that complex mixes are easy to follow. For the price, this is a solid spatial performance, although more technically accomplished IEMs can give you sharper image definition and cleaner separation between individual elements.

Depth Layering – Depth layering is another area where the 1900 performs well enough to establish a proper three-dimensional presentation. Lead vocals and primary instruments generally sit forward, while backing parts, percussion and ambient information can recede behind them. There is enough front-to-back organisation that dense recordings don’t simply flatten into a single plane. Where it falls short is in the separation between those layers. The transitions can be somewhat blended, and the rear of the stage doesn’t have the same depth or atmospheric information that more accomplished IEMs can produce. For the price, though, the 1900 gives you useful depth rather than merely width, and that goes a long way towards making the presentation sound spatially organised.

Detail Retrieval & Resolution – This is where the 1900 becomes a little more complicated. The energetic upper treble puts plenty of emphasis on cymbal edges, guitar texture, percussion and other high-frequency information, so the initial impression is quite detailed. There is always something being presented to the listener, and for $235, the amount of information it brings into focus is quite good. Spend more time with it, however, and the distinction between detail retrieval and detail emphasis becomes clearer. The upper treble makes certain details easier to notice, but the relaxed upper-mid/lower-treble region works in the opposite direction by softening some of the attack, bite and presence cues that help instruments sound sharply delineated. You can hear the guitar, for example, but its initial pick attack doesn’t have quite the same immediacy, and in a dense arrangement that can introduce a slight haze around the instrument.

The 1900 therefore gives you a somewhat unusual combination: plenty of apparent detail up top, but not quite the same level of low-level transparency or separation underneath it. Fine decay, room ambience, very subtle textural differences and quieter production details aren’t rendered with the same ease as they are on genuinely resolving IEMs. The slightly rounded bass doesn’t help either; when a mix gets busy down low, some information can lose a little definition. That doesn’t mean the 1900 struggles with complex material. Individual instruments generally retain their identity, busy arrangements remain intelligible, and the driver integration is good enough that the presentation feels coherent rather than like several drivers taking turns to announce themselves. For the asking price, this is a more than respectable level of resolution, but I would still place it firmly in the good mid-fi category rather than call it a resolving specialist.

End Result – Taken as a whole, the 1900’s technical performance is a good example of a well-rounded $235 implementation rather than a single-attribute specialist. Its soundstage has good scale, separation is clean, depth layering is useful, and detail retrieval is perfectly competent for the price. The upper-mid/lower-treble dip costs it some bite, immediacy and image definition with certain instruments, while the elevated upper treble creates plenty of sparkle without quite translating into equivalent gains in resolution. None of these are deal-breakers, and for the price, the overall technical package is more than good enough. The bigger gains higher up the ladder come from refinement rather than some fundamental deficiency: greater spatial depth, sharper image definition, cleaner low-level retrieval and more effortless transparency. And that is probably the fairest way to look at the 1900 technically. It does a lot right for $235, but it doesn’t hide its compromises either. More importantly, those compromises don’t stop it from working as a complete IEM, which is ultimately where the 1900 makes its strongest case.

Source Pairing.

At 10Ω and 124dB sensitivity, the 1900 is extremely easy to drive. A modest dongle or DAP is already more than capable of getting it loud, so this isn’t an IEM where I would start talking about dedicated amplification as though we’re trying to power a small space heater. What matters more is output impedance. With a low-impedance multi-driver design, I’d stick to a source with a genuinely low output impedance to minimise any interaction with the crossover and potential change in tonal balance. The good news is that pretty much any competent modern dongle or DAP should work beautifully here. Given the sensitivity, I’d be more concerned about source noise than insufficient power.

Comparisons.

Binary Acoustics 1900 vs Binary Acoustics EP321 MEMS.

This is probably the most important comparison within Binary’s own lineup because both IEMs use the same rather unusual 10mm dynamic driver + 6mm passive-radiator foundation. From there, however, Binary takes two very different routes. The 1900 is the warmer and fuller sounding of the two, while the EP321 MEMS is noticeably cleaner, more transparent and technically more accomplished.

The interesting thing is the bass. Looking at the graph, the 1900 actually carries slightly more deep-sub-bass energy, so this isn’t a case of the EP321 simply having more bass. Yet to my ears, the EP321 sounds considerably more incisive and dynamic down low. Its bass notes have a sharper leading edge and greater sense of impact, whereas the 1900’s bass has a softer, somewhat rounder character. This is a good example of why bass quantity and bass quality are two very different things.

The midrange is also noticeably different. The 1900 has a fuller and warmer presentation, while the EP321 feels leaner and cleaner through the middle. Vocals on the 1900 have more body, whereas the EP321 gives me more separation around individual elements and a more transparent view into the recording.

The treble is perhaps the biggest FR difference. The 1900 has considerably more energy through roughly 9–14kHz, giving it a more obvious sparkling character. The EP321 is much more restrained through that region and has a different treble balance, which gives the two a noticeably different character rather than simply making one brighter than the other.

Overall, I think the EP321 MEMS is clearly the stronger technical performer. The 1900, however, has a warmer and fuller balance that may appeal more to listeners who don’t want the EP321’s leaner, more incisive presentation. For me, if I’m looking specifically for technical performance, the EP321 wins comfortably; if I want the more relaxed and coloured tuning, the 1900 is the one I’d choose.

Binary Acoustics 1900 vs Yu9 Audio Que.

The Que is one of the IEMs I find particularly hard to ignore in this price conversation because of just how much technical performance Yu9 has managed to extract from it. It has tighter and faster bass, a beautifully textured midrange and a noticeably more refined spatial presentation, with excellent imaging, depth and layering. More importantly, all of that technical ability is presented without losing the organic, musical character that makes the Que so enjoyable. The 1900 takes a somewhat different approach. It has more bass quantity and warmth, considerably more sparkle up top and a more immediately coloured presentation, but its bass isn’t as tight and its overall resolution and transparency don’t quite reach the same level. The Que sounds cleaner and more effortlessly resolving, while the 1900 is the fuller and slightly more relaxed listen. And this is where the price difference becomes important. The Que costs substantially more, so the 1900 isn’t really a direct replacement for it. But the Que is also a very good reminder of just how competitive the market has become: when an IEM like the Que can deliver that level of technical performance while still sounding this musical, a $235 set has to offer a particularly compelling combination to stand out. The 1900 does that through its warmer balance, generous bass quantity and sparkling treble, but from a purely technical perspective, I’d take the Que. If thinking only musically, either of the two.

Binary Acoustics 1900 vs CrinEar Daybreak.

The Daybreak takes a more restrained approach, particularly through the upper treble, while the 1900 adds considerably more energy and sparkle up top. Interestingly, the two are actually quite close through much of the core midrange, so this isn’t a case of two IEMs taking radically different approaches to vocals. Both give vocals good presence and intelligibility, but the 1900 adds more colour around that presentation through its deeper bass and more energetic upper registers.

The bass difference is also more nuanced than simply saying one has more and the other has less. The 1900 puts a little more emphasis into the deeper sub-bass, while the Daybreak carries a little more energy through parts of the upper-bass/lower-mid region. In practice, the 1900 therefore has a slightly warmer and more physical low-end impression, whereas the Daybreak sounds a little cleaner and more evenly integrated through the lower half of the spectrum.

The bigger difference is up top. The Daybreak is considerably smoother and more restrained through the upper treble, while the 1900 has a pronounced rise through the 8kHz region and considerably more energy further up. That gives the Binary more sparkle, edge and apparent detail, but also makes its treble character more noticeable from recording to recording. The Daybreak, by comparison, is easier to forget about and simply listen through.

This also extends to their overall technical presentation. The 1900 can sound more immediately detailed and lively because of that additional upper-frequency energy, while the Daybreak comes across as cleaner and more even-handed. I wouldn’t say the Daybreak is dramatically more technically capable across the board, but it has fewer tonal distractions from the underlying recording.

For my preferences, the Daybreak is the safer choice when I want a more neutral, controlled and consistent presentation. The 1900 has more personality and can be more immediately engaging, particularly with rock, pop and electronic music where that added bass weight and treble sparkle work rather well. The Daybreak is the tidier presentation; the 1900 is the one with a little more tasteful seasoning. And sometimes, that extra seasoning is exactly what makes the dish more interesting.

The Reference and 1900 are really approaching reproduction from different philosophies. The Reference is considerably closer to a genuinely neutral, monitor-oriented balance, with substantially less bass colour and far less upper-treble emphasis. The 1900 is warmer, fuller and noticeably more coloured at both ends. The difference is obvious with bass-heavy recordings. The 1900 has substantially more low-frequency presence, while the Reference keeps the low end considerably more restrained and proportionate. At the other end, the 1900 has much more sparkle and upper-frequency energy, whereas the Reference is deliberately more controlled.

For me, the Reference isn’t something I’d reserve only for studio work. Its neutrality is exactly what makes it so appealing for simply listening to an album. When I want to hear the recording with as little tonal editorialising as possible, I’d take the Reference over the 1900 without hesitation. It gives me a more reliable window into the balance, timbre and production decisions contained in the recording. The 1900 is more coloured, and that colour can absolutely be enjoyable. There are recordings where the added bass weight and treble sparkle make the music feel more immediately engaging. But I wouldn’t consider that inherently preferable. Given my preference for reference-oriented tuning, the Reference is the set I’d reach for more often. The 1900 therefore makes more sense if you specifically want that warmer, fuller and sparklier flavour. The Reference makes more sense when neutrality itself is part of what you’re looking for.

The Volume S is one of the more obvious alternatives because it also uses a 10mm dynamic driver and 6mm passive radiator, but the two sound quite different. The Volume S carries more energy through the upper-bass/lower-mid region, while the 1900 has a little more deep-sub-bass weight and considerably more energy up top. The result is a smoother and more controlled presentation from the Volume S, while the 1900 sounds more colourful, with greater sparkle and a more obvious sense of low-end extension. Vocals on the Volume S also have a little more polish and refinement, while the 1900 has a slightly more energetic character – which I never mind personally. I would choose the Volume S when I want warm-neutral refinement and control; the 1900 is more appealing when I want a little more colour, sub-bass weight and sparkle without going fully V-shaped.

The DMA is the more overtly shaped and immediately dramatic of the two, but the listening impressions reveal a more complicated story than simply “DMA has more bass and treble”, as the graphs show. The 1900 actually carries more deep-sub-bass energy, while the DMA has relatively more emphasis through parts of the mid-bass. The DMA’s treble response is also considerably more varied, with stronger emphasis in some regions but substantially less energy than the 1900 higher up.

Where the DMA gets particularly interesting is its bone-conduction driver implementation. The BCD doesn’t simply add another layer of frequency response; it contributes to the DMA’s distinctly physical and spatial presentation, giving it a more holographic quality than you’d expect from the FR alone. The 1900, by comparison, has a more conventional spatial presentation, with its strengths lying more in overall coherence and tonal balance.

In practice, the DMA sounds more aggressively contrasty. Its bass has a stronger sense of punch through the mid-bass, the mids are leaner, and the treble contributes more to that obvious V meets W-shaped character. The 1900 is fuller through the centre, with more vocal body and a more even overall balance. The DMA therefore has the bigger immediate wow factor, not just because of its tuning but also because of the additional spatial and physical dimensionality its BCD brings to the presentation. The 1900 is easier to live with across a wider range of recordings because its midrange is less carved out and its tonal balance is less extreme. I also find its presentation more natural with vocals and acoustic instruments. The DMA’s spankier midrange gives it more drama, while the BCD adds a distinctive technical/spatial quality that the 1900 doesn’t really attempt to replicate.

So, if I want the more dramatic and technically distinctive presentation, I’d take the DMA. If I want a more balanced and versatile tuning that still retains plenty of bass presence and treble sparkle, the 1900 will be the better fit.

The TSMR X is the more elaborate platform, with seven drivers, multiple tuning switches and an ADEL-style pressure-management module. Sonically, however, the difference is quite straightforward: the X carries considerably more low-frequency energy and has a stronger upper-midrange rise, giving it a fuller, richer and more basshead-oriented presentation. The 1900 is comparatively lighter through the bass and puts more emphasis into the upper treble, giving it more sparkle and contrast. The pressure-management module is a genuinely useful addition, helping reduce the sealed-in ear-pressure sensation that can come with conventional IEMs. The tuning switches are less convincing in practice, though. They offer plenty of combinations on paper, but the control over each band isn’t particularly fine, and many of those combinations don’t produce changes I’d actually use in real-world listening. The 1900 is therefore the simpler proposition: no pressure-management system, no switch matrix, just one fixed tuning that either works for you or doesn’t. I’d take the X if I wanted the richer, more bass-oriented presentation and valued the pressure management; the 1900 makes more sense if I prefer its more restrained low end and sparkier top and simply want to plug in and listen.

Conclusion.

The Binary Acoustics 1900 is one of the easier IEMs I’ve heard to recommend in this price range. It doesn’t really do anything wrong. You get a warm and fairly full presentation, plenty of bass quantity, a nicely balanced and natural midrange, enough treble sparkle to keep things lively, and technical performance that is quite respectable for the price. The bass could use more control and attack, the treble isn’t particularly refined, and the resolution is good rather than exceptional. But those are also fairly reasonable compromises at around $235.

More importantly, the 1900 is remarkably easy to live with. It works across a wide range of music, doesn’t have any glaring tonal deal-breaker, and has enough technical ability to keep things interesting. Put together, all of that makes it a very good jack of all trades. It’s good at most things without being particularly dominant in any one of them.

And that’s both the strength and the limitation of a jack of all trades. The 1900 isn’t the set I’d pick for the tightest bass, the highest resolution, the most neutral tuning or the most technically ambitious presentation. There are other IEMs that will do each of those things better. But the 1900 rarely asks you to make a serious compromise elsewhere to get what it does well.

That’s also why I see it as an easy recommendation rather than a definite standout recommendation. At around $235, you’re spoiled for choice. The EP321 MEMS offers a meaningful step up in technical performance, the Volume S brings greater refinement, the Daybreak takes a more restrained approach, and the Reference is the obvious choice for a reference-oriented presentation. Then you have the Yu9 Que and BGVP DMA, which are particularly interesting alternatives in their own right – the Que delivers a level of technical performance that makes it very hard to ignore, while the DMA brings its own technical strengths and a more distinctive spatial character. They each have their compromises, but they also give you something the 1900 doesn’t quite have: a more obvious defining trait.

The 1900 sits comfortably in the middle of all of that. And honestly, there is nothing wrong with that. Sometimes Jack doesn’t need to win the race; he just needs to be the guy you can trust to do a good job at pretty much anything you throw at him. And that’s the thing about Jack. He may never come first in anything, but he’s the sporty teammate who shows up, does everything well, and delivers when you need him. For that, Jack will always have a place in the team, and that’s why the 1900 earns its place in this segment too.
